A Designated Learning Institution is a school in Canada where a student have to be accepted at before they become eligible for a study permit. To apply for a study permit on or after June 1, 2014, the applicant will need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution and will need to provide the Designated Learning Institution number (DLI #) for their school of choice. The DLI number is the number that begins with the letter “O” on the study permit application form. The prospective student needs to consult the designated learning institutions list (DLI) for schools at the postsecondary level.

All primary and secondary schools in Canada are automatically designated and no DLI number is provided. Therefore, applicants for primary and secondary schools do not need a DLI number on their application form.
